Cat blanket knitting pattern

I don't know about your cats but mine love to sleep on any clothing I leave out on my bed or chair.  So to stop getting cat hair all over my clothes I decided to knit them blankets to sleep on and they love them.  I created the pattern from a stitch I loved and have knit it in different sizes and colours.

You can see Lola here enjoying her blanket :

CAT BLANKET PATTERN

This pattern uses a lace pattern with a border of garter stitch all around.

I knit the blankets with Red Heart's Comfort yarn using 4,5mm needles.  The amount of yarn used varies on the width and length you make the blanket.  I know with the 454g ball of yarn you can knit quite a few of these.  A 100g ball of worsted yarn should give you a decent size blanket.

Stitches used :
K : knit
P : purl
yo : yarn over

Cast on  a total of 81 stitches.
Knit 8 rows to create border of garter stitch.
Row 1 & 3 : Knit all.
Row 2 & 4 : K5 *Purl* end with K5
Row 5 :  K5 * P5,  yo, K1, yo *(11 times), P5. K5  You will end up with 103 stitches.
Row 6 : K10 *P3,K5*(11 times), K5
Row 7 : K5 * P5, K3 *(11 times), P5, K5
Row 8 : K10 * P3tog, K5 *( 11 times), K5

K10  Correction from K5 in original.  Sorry for the mistake.

Do not count stitches for rows 6 & 7, they will be decreased on row 8.

Repeat the 8 rows until you reach the length you want ending on the 8th row. Correction :  ending with rows 1-3 and then knit  8 rows for the border of garter stitch.

If you want to change the width of this blanket you just need to use a multiple of 6 stitches plus 5 for the lace pattern.  Add 10 stitches for the garter stitch border.

Here's a detail of what the stitch looks like :

If you have any questions just leave them in the comments section and I will be happy to help you out.

  2. Is this a one-skein project or does it take more than one skein?

  3. Thanks! I had not thought of the yarn used nor did I think of the needles used. I think 100g of worsted yarn would give a decent sized blanket for cats.

  4. Thanks! And with worsted yarn, I expect size 9 needles would work well.

  5. Cute! She looks like she is smiling.

  8. I ended up with 2 extra sts on the 5th row,I do not know what I did wrong,I started with 81 sts and ended up with 101 sts

  9. You should actually have 103 stitches in all after the yarn overs are done on the 5th row.

  10. After my cat killed my chair i spent a lot of time and money redoing it but the fabric is lighter. He is black and the hair just shows on it something bad. Made this adorable afgan with a brown yarn drapped it over an arm and he only sleeps on it. Thanks for the idea and im sure my chair thanks u too. Never would have thought of making him his very own blanket.

  12. Looks great! What does this blanket measure?

    ReplyDelete
  13. The width for both colours is around 49-50 cm (19.5-20 in) using the Red Heart yarn and 4,5mm needles. The length of the green one is 40 cm (15,5 in)while the pink one is 89 cm (35 in).

  14. what would the width be using size 8 needles and or size 9 needles

  15. Really cute! I am going to make one of these for a new puppy, then one for the cats too.
    Thanks!

  16. hi,
i am new to doing patterns and things other then a scarf. and am wondering if in your instructions to make the blanket is there a step or a sequence missing in Row 7? seeing as i have calculated it and it doesn't calculate out evenly.

    ReplyDelete
  17. sorry not row 7... rows 6 and 8... they don't calculate out properly... are we supposed to P5 before K5 at the end of those two rows?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Michael, it should be K10 at the beginning. I have made the correction, thanks for catching it.

  19. "what would the width be using size 8 needles and or size 9 needles"

It would be wider but it does depend on how you knit, you could be knitting tighter or looser than I do.

I didn't calculate gauge at all when I originally knitted these blankets.

  20. how do you do yo what does it mean please

  21. A yo is a yarn over. You can see some videos here instructing you how to do a yarn over :

  25. I was hoping you could help me out. I've been counting my stitches and when I complete my 5th row, I'm short a stitch to complete the entire fifth row and then when I count my stitches for the 5th row, I have over 103. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. If you could help me out, that would be great!

    ReplyDelete
  26. This happens on the same row? It could be you are doing too many yarn overs.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks! I am going to make one for my chihuahua!

    ReplyDelete
  28. hiya...what yarn do you use? I'm in the UK, so would it knit up to double knit?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I used Red Heart's Comfort yarn : http://www.coatsandclark.com/Products/KnittingCrochet/Yarns/Medium/Red+Heart+Comfort.htm I really don't know how it would knit up to double knit.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm new to knitting...I understand what you mean by YO, but when you change from purl to plain and it's not marked YO, do you do it all the same? omg, I'm not very bright...

    ReplyDelete
  31. You only need to do the YO where marked or else you will end up with too many stitches in your row. Just change from purl to plain without the YO and everything will be fine.

  32. Hi there, I just found your pattern, and I'm dying to try it. I donate to my local animal shelter, and I make blankets for them, and they would love this. I'm also a member of the ASPCA, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and they're always needing blankets like this, their website is www.aspca.org You might want to contact them. Thank you. Nicki

  33. Hi, I just found your pattern and I have two cats and I am going to make them for their special places that they like to lay. I saw that you made a correction on row 6 of knit 10, do I still leave row 2, row 4, and row 5 with the knit 5 or do I change row 2, row 4 and row 5 with knit 10 also. Thank you, Deb

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes, you do leave rows 2,4 and 5 with the knit 5.

  35. Fast and easy pattern.. I used up odd & ends of Bernat 100% cotton to make this soft blanket for my new chihuahua puppy. I am sure it will keep her warm. Wish I could have added a photo, it is very pretty

  36. So glad you found it a fast and easy knit.I would love to see your pic,you can always post it on my Facebook page :Knits By Nat.

  37. I've just seen the cat blanket pattern, not quite sure about your early correction, do you mean K10 on row 2 ?
    Sally

    ReplyDelete
  38. So do we change K5 to K10 on rows 2 and 4 or leave it as K5? An earlier comment made it sound like it stays at K5 but your more recent comment says do K10 on row 2. Just clarifying! I'm finally going to make this and I'm so excited! Here is what I deciphered from the corrections and what not. Can you please check and make sure I understood properly and that rows 2, 4, 5, and 7 all have K5? In rows 6 and 8, that P3, K5 sequence is still that? It doesn't change to P3, K10? Sorry for all the questions and thank you in advance for the help and adorable blanket! My kitties will LOVE it! :-)

    Row 1 : Knit all.
    Row 2 : K5 *Purl* end with K5
    Row 3: Knit all
    Row 4: K5 *Purl* end with K5
    Row 5 : K5 * P5, yo, K1, yo *(11 times), P5. K5 You will end up with 103 stitches.
    Row 6 : K10 *P3,K5*(11 times), K5
    Row 7 : K5 * P5, K3 *(11 times), P5, K5
    Row 8 : K10 * P3tog, K5 *( 11 times), K5

  39. The way you have written the rows out is fine. Rows 2,4,5 and 7 have K5. Rows 6 and 8 are P3,K5 although at the last repeat you do end up having knit 10 stitches.

  42. Love this pattern. Used worsted weight on Size 8 needles. Made it for a chihuahua and she looked so comfy. I want to make a regular size afghan. Any thoughts as to how many to cast on? I would think doubling but wanted to reach out for advice. Thanks

    1. It really depends the size of the afghan you want to knit. It could even be tripled to make a big cozy one.
